The most common and affordable way to visually inspect a septic system is to perform a dye test. This test involves flushing fluorescent dye into the waste lines and running plumbing fixtures simultaneously for 30-45 minutes. The inspector will look for any backups, slow-draining fixtures and/or surface breakouts with dye. If dye is found on the ground surface, it is a strong indication that the septic system has failed.
